Democracies and symbols of modernity

In most democracies in the world, governments must balance two opposing and paradoxical forces. On the one hand, the State is occupied by private interests, which typically are detrimental to the common good. On the other hand, governments must address general concerns from the population (education, health etc.). One way to mask this paradox is by adopting “efficiency” symbols from the private world. Thus, it is fundamental to sell a (false) image of professionalism, to come across as a modern government.
